SkillSoft and CSC Team Up to Help Organizations Reduce Their Impact on the Environment

Companies Offer Free Access to Award-Winning Online Learning and Best Practices Resources

NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Apr. 22, 2009-- SkillSoft PLC (Nasdaq: SKIL), a leading SaaS provider of e-learning and performance support solutions for global enterprises, government, education and small to medium-sized businesses, and CSC (NYSE: CSC), a global leader in providing technology-enabled business solutions and services, are collaborating to provide free content to help organizations learn how to implement more environmentally friendly business practices. The “Make an Impact without Leaving an Impact” Web site, www.skillsoft.com/online/sustainability/ which gives visitors access to technology-enabled learning content, including videos, courses, books and white papers, will be made available from Earth Day, April 22, to World Environment Day, June 5.

“This Web site enables us to help organizations raise their environmental consciousness and show that anyone can make a difference,” said John Ambrose, Senior Vice President of Strategy, Corporate Development & Emerging Business for SkillSoft. “Our collaboration with CSC shows that people are the most important renewable resource, and online learning plays a pivotal role in this.”

Visitors to the site are asked to contribute ideas for how businesses can reduce impact on the environment. The most innovative ideas will be published on the site.

The site also provides public access to a sampling of some of SkillSoft’s most popular products, including online courses, selected Books24x7® titles, and “GreenTalks” videos featuring environmentally-focused thought leaders. One video features John A. Glowacki Jr., CSC’s chief technology officer, discussing the company’s research on environmental best practices for IT. An ExecSummary® of the popular book Green to Gold: How Smart Companies Use Environmental Strategy to Innovate, Create Value and Add Competitive Advantage by Daniel Esty and Andrew Winston, is also included.

In addition, white papers are available from both SkillSoft and CSC’s Leading Edge Forum that highlight pro-active steps that organizations can take in both IT and training to positively impact the environment. Taking online courses as an alternative to classes that require travel and facilities costs is one example of how individuals can make decisions to help reduce a company’s overall carbon footprint.

“CSC is pleased to work with SkillSoft to provide a forum for sharing our thoughts and practices with companies shaping their own green agendas,” said Glowacki. “We are proud to be a leader in green IT, as evidenced by recent accolades and our board-level membership in the Climate Savers Computing Initiative, a non-profit organization formed to lessen the environmental impact of computers through reduced energy consumption. In addition, our legacy in learning systems positions us well to evolve and promote Green business and IT practices.”

By offering training and reference materials online, natural resources are conserved in many ways:

  • Less fuel is used since employees don’t have to travel by car, train or air to take classes;
  • Less energy is used to light/heat/provide AC to physical classrooms;
  • Less paper is used because courses and materials are online, reducing our impact on trees;
  • More money is saved by reducing costs for printing, paper, airline travel and energy use.
