Open Learning Services Architecture

With an expanding inventory of content and new, more dynamic content types that combine traditional courseware with related services, SkillSoft customers are often challenged by the integration and maintenance necessary to deploy these resources to their learners. SkillSoft has responded to this need with the creation of SkillSoft Open Learning Services.

The goal of Open Learning Services is to simplify and enhance deployment of SkillSoft’s various offerings through a customer’s platform of choice.

The Open Learning Services are a set of Web services designed to allow developers to integrate SkillSoft content and services into their respective platforms.

The first set of Open Learning Services was released in April 2006. This release focused on Web services that simplify catalog management and support the integration of Search-and-Learn into a third party platform.

A typical LMS can house thousands of assets. Automating the catalog management process is a huge benefit to companies that install content to an LMS. SkillSoft’s catalog management Web services allow a third party LMS to automatically load entitled assets into the catalog.

The Search-and-Learn Web service allows a customer to perform a search across all of the entitled SkillSoft assets, including courses, SkillBriefs, job aids, books, etc. The search results can be combined with a search done in another system to provide a single view of all available resources to the learner. In addition, the Search-and-Learn Web service allows a user to directly launch a SkillSoft asset from the search results, significantly improving the learner experience of finding the right asset at the right time.

SkillSoft Learning Portlets*

In today's fast-paced and ever-changing environment, providing learning on-demand – when, where and how employees need it most – is more important than ever. Delivering relevant learning at the point of need results in greater utilization of your learning assets, and more informed and productive employees.

SkillSoft Learning Portlets are pre-built, standards-based components that provide an easy way to deliver personalized e-learning into your enterprise portal environment. Installable in minutes, Learning Portlets can be added to one or more portal pages with a drag-and-drop, configure-and-go approach, enabling rapid deployment of embedded e-learning without the need for extensive coding.

Users can search and launch any learning asset directly from their familiar portal environment, and access personalized learning plans, lists of favorite assets, folders of online books from Books24x7®, and more. Delivered as a hosted service by SkillSoft, Learning Portlets provide tracking and reporting for this distributed embedded learning, reducing your deployment time, cost and effort while allowing you to increase learning content usage and benefits.

The SkillSoft e-learning architecture has been built from the ground up for the Web, utilizing leading-edge and standard Web technologies. AICC & SCORM Certified

In 2004, SkillSoft became the first e-learning provider to achieve certification for our courseware in AICC and SCORM. Our SkillSims and TestPrep exams are also AICC and SCORM certified. Many SkillSoft customers have implemented third-party learning management systems and have integrated SkillSoft content using these standards.
