Employee Performance Reviews: Lose the Jitters and Start on Solid Ground

By Julie Ogilvie, Vice President, Corporate Marketing, SkillSoft

Performance reviews can certainly be a time for anxiety within the workplace, as both managers and employees are faced with potentially uncomfortable situations. However, they are necessary, as performance molehills will become mountains and problems will arise if managers and employees have different expectations of performance.

One thing we’ve heard from a number of our customers is that managers will often put off preparing for performance reviews because of the emotional stress associated with them.   As a result, communication between manager and employee can break down, leading to scattered priorities, misperceptions and resentments throughout the organization, ultimately impacting productivity and morale. On the other hand, when managers embrace and properly execute the review process as a crucial part of employees’ development programs, everyone benefits.

To help you and your managers prepare for your organization’s review process, we are providing free access to three of our most popular performance management courses. These courses, outlined below, have helped time-strapped managers properly prepare and conduct employee reviews while reducing the associated anxiety that accompanies them. In particular, they will help managers overcome the potentially awkward situations that may arise and the resulting emotional reactions that occur during the process.

The three courses included are:

  • Performance Appraisal Essentials: Planning for Appraisals: This course explains why performance appraisals are important, describes how to develop an Employee Performance Plan, and outlines ways to monitor ongoing employee performance.
  • Performance Appraisal Essentials: Conducting Traditional Appraisals: This course describes ways to prepare for appraisal meetings, as well as how to carry out those meetings effectively by following certain steps and guidelines. In particular, it demonstrates what to do when an employee becomes emotional during an appraisal.
  • First Steps to Turning Around a Performance Problem: This course identifies the benefits of dealing with minor performance problems, including communication strategies, situational resolution and implementing corrective measures for employees who are unwilling or unable to perform.
