Skillsoft Compliance – Customer Advisory Forum Event (CAFÉ) – Summer 2013

By Duncan Shine, Sales Manager, Skillsoft U.K. region

Skillsoft
would like to thank all the participants in our inaugural summer Compliance CAFÉ
UK event for their energy, commitment and openness in making the event such a
success! Key customers from both Care and Hospitality Sectors joined us at
London’s prestigious ‘8 Northumberland’ Hotel, just yards from Trafalgar Square
to help us shape our business for 2014 and beyond. The purpose was to give our
customers a sense of our exciting plans for elearning in Compliance, the
investment we are making in refreshed content and our enhanced platform, as
well as the new Skillsoft solutions and services available since our acquisition
of MindLeaders in 2012.

The
event served as a formal introduction to Skillsoft but more importantly, was a
chance for us to hear first-hand from our customers what they are looking for
from Skillsoft as a key partner.  What
are the trends and the key drivers in maximising the benefit to the business of
compliance solutions? What developments and investments should Skillsoft make to
help our customers gain and retain their competitive advantage?

Instructive & revealing workshops – As well as formal presentations, all of which are included in this
post, the event gave our customers a chance to work together in informal groups
to hone in on exactly how they expect Skillsoft to partner with them to go
beyond the simple ‘tick in the box’ for compliance. These were very energetic
and interactive sessions which came up with a number of key themes.

We need to go beyond compliance – An overwhelmingly consistent message from the workshops was that it
is not enough to simply look to drive the activities to create an adequate
report and leave it at that.  Customers
in both sectors told us that the true competitive advantage lies in using
compliance learning as part of a blended approach to permanently change
behaviours, to promote consistency of best practice and to drive a better
customer experience by having more engaged, skilled and motivated staff.
Learning areas such as personal and management development, customer facing skills,
and time management were highlighted as skills required to compliment and
mobilize compliance-related best practices broadly across and deep within
organisations.

Learning must be high quality – The workshops made it clear that for compliance learning to be truly
effective, it cannot be just a means to an end – just getting as many to ‘pass’
as possible. The learning should be engaging and thorough enough to ensure that
learners understand the true purpose of the learning: to make a safer and more
productive environment for both staff and customers alike.  Learners need to be able to refresh their
learning on specific areas instantly, and as often as they require. If learning
is just a ‘once every three years’ event, then the value is lost.

Mobile delivery is key – Learners
are changing. The workshops fed back
to us that today’s employees are used to getting their information quickly and
at the point and moment of need.  Today’s
Care and Hospitality workers are used to mobile devices, to instant access
wherever and whenever they are.  Without
compromising the regulatory requirements of compliance learning, Skillsoft
needs to ensure that learning can be delivered where appropriate on tablets,
smart phones and other devices, and accessible to learners wherever they are.

Listen to the experts – As
the worlds of compliance and core skills learning continue to develop, our
customers made it very clear to us that they expect to be involved in the
process.  It is our customers who have
the day to day experience of the challenges their businesses face.  Only by Skillsoft continuing to consult with
our customers throughout the year, to tell you what we’re working on, but more
importantly to hear from you the direction we should be taking, will we be able
to continue to help our customers train and develop the engaged, motivated and
committed workforce that will give you that competitive advantage.

The
presentations from the day are included below, and we will be providing much
more information on new content and technology, mobile learning and going
beyond satisfying regulatory requirements over the coming weeks.

In the
meantime, we listened to the feedback and heard the attendees at the meeting
ask that we have more events per year. We all thought that was a great idea so
we have generated a new date for your diaries! We will discuss at that meeting
another requirement that was common across the workshops: the need to tailor
Skillsoft’s best-of-breed content to reflect the branding and culture of your
own organisation to offer your employees a uniquely engaging experience. We will
be holding the following Workshop on custom content creation.
