In today’s competitive economy, it’s not enough to keep your head down, work hard and wait to be recognized for your talents.
You need to be willing to share yourself and your ideas if you expect to advance,” says author and branding expert Dorie Clark. “Building a strong professional reputation is the best way to protect and advance your career.”
Clark, a nationally recognized marketing strategy consultant, professional speaker, blogger and book author, is teaming with SkillSoft on Thursday, Oct. 22 for a live webcast that will help you boost your professional value by becoming a recognized thought leader. Register now for the webcast.
In her latest book, Stand Out: How to Find Your Breakthrough Idea and Build A Following Around It (2015), Clark argues that the days of so called “safe jobs”— jobs where people quietly plug away at their desks and wait to be recognized on the merits of their work—are over. In fact, doing so is a recipe for “professional disaster.”
The path to true success, Clark says, is by becoming a recognized thought leader. You can achieve this by identifying a topic you are passionate about, developing your key messages and building a following around your ideas by engaging a community of like-minded thinkers.
Sound difficult? It’s not as hard as it seems. Clark says that many people talk themselves out of becoming thought leaders because they don’t give themselves enough credit. They think it must take some unique talent or insight, an advanced degree or a unique set of connections.
On the contrary, thought leadership isn’t dependent on having the most prestigious diplomas or accolades, or being the utmost authority on a topic, Clark says. If you can find an area that you are interested in, stay on top of trends, ask good questions, challenge assumptions and make your findings relevant to a broader audience, you are well on your way.
“Just by taking the risk, you are giving yourself a chance to stand out. You are far ahead of the silent majority.”
