The effect of gender parity has been in the news a lot recently. Even though the original report came out in 2013, amazingly it took Hollywood to really get the people talking about it. And it took a man.
On October 17th 2015, Bradley Cooper promised to demand his female co-stars are paid the same as he is. The pay gap was only discovered by Jennifer Lawrence, Cooper’s co-star in many movies, from the leaked documents in the Sony hack. Today in America the median wage of full-time working women is $39,600 compared to $50,400 collected by men.
At the current pace, it will be more than a century before there is gender equality in the C-suite.

While many organizations are starting to take action to correct the gender gap, it’s clear that we have a long way to go to reach parity. International Women’s Day is March 8th and the theme of this year’s celebration is Pledge for Parity. As a way to celebrate and also take action, the International Women’s Day organization is asking for individuals and organizations to pledge to help accelerate parity. What would this look like in your workplace? What benefits may come from correcting the gender gap in today’s workplace?
A McKinsey Global Institute report that finds: “Gender inequality is not only a pressing moral and social issue but also a critical economic challenge. If women—who account for half the world’s working-age population—do not achieve their full economic potential, the global economy will suffer.”
The World Economic Forum estimates at current rates gender parity will not be achieved until 2133.
While the statistics may seem overwhelming, there are simple ways to get started in supporting change. You can sign the online pledge on the International Women’s Day site. You can develop a pledge for parity campaign to involve your community, host a pledge party, or even host a prominent speaker to help open the conversation.
