At what point do leaders say goodbye to their current career, and when is the right time to do it? David Heenan, a former Marine, business school dean and corporate executive, explores this intricate—and rarely addressed—topic. Profiling industry leaders like founder of Citigroup, Sandy Weill, former World Heavyweight Champion, George Foreman, founder and CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, and former CEO of Xerox, Anne Mulcahy, Leaving on Top: Graceful Exits for Leaders reveals the secrets to excelling in one of life’s most formidable challenges: the graceful exit.
Heenan understands how to exit gracefully from his profession – he’s done it several times. In Leaving on Top, he pairs the wisdom derived from his experience with dozens of high-profile exits, both graceful and untimely. Heenan’s examination includes ten exiting lessons from leaders of industry, such as:
- Timeless Wonders: With their skills very much in-tact, these white-haired prodigies have no need to call it quits.
- Aging Despots: Reluctant to leave the spotlight, they are past their prime and should turn the reins over to a new generation.
- Comeback Kids: Whether to return their enterprises to their former glory, or simply save themselves from boredom, these once-departed leaders have returned with a vengeance.
- Graceful Exiters: Quitting while ahead, they leave a sterling reputation as they move on.
