About the Author

Lisa J. Downs is a leadership development manager for T-Mobile USA’s Integrated Customer Experience Group, where she conducts communications, leadership, and management training and serves as a coach and curriculum developer. She is also the owner of DevelopmentWise, her consulting business in Redmond, Washington. Previously, Downs served as a senior learning and organizational development specialist for The Growth Partnership, Inc., a consulting firm headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, that specializes in the accounting industry. At The Growth Partnership, she worked as a workshop facilitator, a coach for the organization’s partner development program, and a curriculum designer with an emphasis on supervisory and communications skills. She was also the manager of learning and development for Clark Nuber PS, a Best of the Best accounting firm in the Seattle area, where she oversaw the firm’s training function and led learning initiatives throughout the company. In addition, she established the Accounting Careers Program for the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Before she moved to Washington State, Downs taught language arts courses at the high school level and earned her secondary education teaching credentials in 1996, which launched her career in learning and development, training, and curriculum design. She also worked for both commercial and public radio stations in the Quad-Cities area of Illinois and Iowa.

Downs received her Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Adult Education from Western Illinois University in 2000, and she completed her undergraduate degree in speech communications in 1991 at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She is president of the ASTD’s Puget Sound chapter, as of 2008, and served as its vice president of membership for two years. She is also an active member of national ASTD, the International Society for Performance Improvement, and the Seattle chapter of SHRM.
