THE CHALLENGE

In the face of the record 30-year low unemployment rate, Hill International, Inc. sought to develop and execute a talent strategy to support the company’s aggressive growth goals. To achieve this business goal, Hill International, Inc. prioritized project management training to assure clients it could deliver projects on time and within budget.

For Hill International, Inc., compliance training has become a fundamental and essential element of its talent strategy.

“The very foundation that Hill is built on is integrity,” said Elizabeth Whalen, Vice President, Learning & Development, Hill International, Inc. “Integrity starts day one, in orientation, and continues throughout a Hill employee’s tenure. Integrity is the most important thread that connects all of us – from our CEO and C-suite to our Board of Directors, employees, agents, and consultants – and it is woven from many threads.”

Whalen described three of those threads:

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion means respecting our differences and appreciating the value our diverse experiences; it is being treated and treating others with respect and dignity.
  • Safety training means a commitment to making sure everyone goes home at the end of the work day.
  • Anti-bribery means setting the standards by which the organization conducts business.

According to Whalen, “Companies that subscribe to good ethics attract employees with like values and qualities, and whether you are just starting your career or bringing a wealth of experience to Hill, good ethics are good business!”

All Hill employees are on a continuous improvement journey that starts on day one with compliance.

THE SOLUTION

Hill University, the company’s learning portal, provides employees with access to industry best practices and knowledge based on Skillsoft’s compliance and leadership & business content.

Utilizing Skillsoft’s compliance solution, Hill International, Inc. employees receive extensive safety training that includes supplemental assignments of full version courses with quarterly assigned Legal Impacts and Compliance Shorts, all available in multiple languages.

According to Whalen, “With the Skillsoft platform, we can create customized curriculums on Hill University to meet the needs of our clients, departments, individual employees, and to resolve any issues.”

Companies that have a reputation for good ethics – whether through their business endeavors, by supporting the community, or treating their employees with respect and dignity – not only retain the best employees, but also reduce risk.

“Investors evaluate risk when investing in a company,” said Whalen. “Employees who have a vested interest in their company’s success go the extra mile. It is a cycle – clients recognize, respect, and want to do business that investors want to invest in. Investors want to invest in companies that reduce risk”

She continued: “Compliance gives our staff the knowledge and tools to reduce risk.”
