What is DevOps?

DevOps is shorthand for ‘Software Development & IT Operations.’ DevOps describes the processes and tactics of collaboration between an organization’s software developers and its IT Operations team. This interdepartmental synergy allows for shorter development cycles and more rapid iterations.

Why is DevOps Important?

DevOps, like Agile or Continuous Delivery, is taking the tech world by storm. Practicing DevOps can yield the following benefits:

  • Faster iteration
  • Faster time to market
  • Higher customer satisfaction
  • Increased product quality
  • Increased reliability

DevOps Toolchain

DevOps utilizes a set of tools (called the DevOps Toolchain) to help organizations achieve their development goals. Tools correspond to the follow phases of DevOps:

  1. Plan
  2. Create
  3. Verify
  4. Preprod
  5. Release
  6. Configure
  7. Monitor

Is There an Official DevOps Certification?

There is no official industry standard for DevOps certification. Some eLearning vendors may offer DevOps certificates, but their value is not universally recognized by employers.

A DevOps Engineer or DevOps Manager is best evaluated based on their experience working in a DevOps environment and their proficiency with tools in the DevOps Toolchain.
