Efficiency is “the ratio of the effective or useful output to the total input in any system.“ Thus, no matter how difficult it is to get the outcome, the amount of work, energy, and time spent by a system will dictate its efficiency while processing the inputs to get the desired results. Bringing this idea to the IT world, efficient backup systems must gather the data, catalog them, and store everything in a very short period of time, respecting the service level agreement (SLA) and lowering the total cost of ownership (TCO). In a so-called “backup system”, Data Domain® acts as the efficient storage, receiving the data from the backup software which gathers and catalogs everything.
