Fiber optics plays a key role in communications, as well as in broadcast and cable systems. Engineers working with fiber optics as well as newcomers to the industry will find the third edition of this reference guide invaluable. It will help the reader develop a solid understanding of the underlying principles of this rapidly changing technology as well as its essential practical applications.

This thoroughly illustrated and indexed third edition has evolved with the technology of fiber optics while still presenting basic and advanced applications clearly, with a minimum of jargon. Updated topics for this edition include:

  • Today's latest trends in DWDM, EDFA, and terabit-per-second data rates over fiber
  • New technology for future transmission capabilities including long-haul transmission
  • Fundamentals of optical fiber, connectors, couplers, and other components and their applications within systems
  • Key characteristics and principles of operation for critical electro-optic components such as LED's, lasers, and detectors
  • Operation of transmitters, receivers, and fiber optic video links

About the Author

David R. Goff, MSEE, is president and chief technical officer of Force, Incorporated (Christiansburg, Virginia), an organization specializing in the design and manufacture of a wide range of fiber optic communication devices. Before joining Force, Goff did instrumentation research at the U.S. Department of Energy and was a fiber optic systems engineer for ITT-EOPD. Prior to that, he worked on systems integration and testing for Bell Laboratories.
