With over four billion subscribers Worldwide, GSM/EDGE is by far the World’s most successful communications technology of all time. Ubiquitous, deployed in every country of the World, except in Japan and South Korea, GSM/EDGE is the result of a continued evolution that has spanned over two decades.

A leading team of experts from Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks and Instituto Nokia de Tecnologia, guide you from the history of GSM standardization to the cutting-edge techniques in the latest 3GPP releases. Covering 3GPP Release 7 and Release 8, and addressing their motivation and detailing their concepts, this book also offers insights into further steps in evolution from Release 9 and beyond.

GSM/EDGE: Evolution and Performance allows you to keep apace with all of the new developments that have occurred in 3GPP on the GSM standard since the introduction of EDGE:

  • Covers all the key aspects of GSM/EDGE Evolution from Release 7 until Release 9 in a systematic manner.
  • Features performance evaluations derived from leading-edge simulation tools and field trials.
  • Addresses network optimization techniques and environmental aspects.
  • Written by leading experts in the field of GSM/EDGE evolution and standardisation.

About the Editors

Mikko Säily graduated from Raahe School of Engineering and Business with a Bachelor’s degree in Embedded Systems and Computer Engineering. He joined Nokia in 1994 and worked as a Senior Specialist in the areas of algorithm design, digital signal processing and radio performance evolution. He has been closely involved in GSM standards evolution, concept development and radio performance evaluations. Currently he works as Research Manager in Nokia Siemens Networks.

Guillaume Sébire graduated in 1997 from the École Nationale Supérieure de Sciences Appliquées et de Technologie (ENSSAT), University of Rennes II with a Master's degree in Electronics and Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems. He joined Nokia in 1997 and is currently working as a Senior Research Manager at Nokia Mobile Solutions leading the GSM research and standardization program for Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks, and the Nokia team in 3GPP TSG GERAN. Guillaume has strongly contributed to the elaboration and the evolution of the GSM/EDGE standard on a wide range of technical topics. Actively participating GSM/EDGE standardization in SMG2 (in particular SMG2EDGE workshops of which he acted as secretary) and in 3GPP TSG GERAN, he held the position of 3GPP TSG GERAN Vice Chairman between April 2005 and May 2007, and has been Chairman of the 3GPP TSG GERAN Working Group 2 since February 2005.

Dr. Eddie Riddingtongraduated in 1997 from the University of Plymouth, UK with a Bachelor's degree and a PhD degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He joined Nokia as a DSP Algorithms Engineer in 1997 and is currently a Senior Specialist in Standardisation at Nokia Siemens Networks. Eddie has been actively involved in GSM / EDGE standardisation since 1997, representing Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks within 3GPP TSG-GERAN Working Group 1. He recently acted as the rapporteur in 3GPP on the Feasibility study for evolved GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN).
