About the Authors

Yale richmond is a veteran of thirty years as a cultural officer in the U.S. Foreign Service, with postings abroad in Germany, Laos, Poland, Austria, and the Soviet Union. He has also served as staff consultant to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Congress), and was Senior Program Officer at the National Endowment for Democracy. A specialist in cultural exchanges and international communication, Richmond has also written From Nyet to Da: Understanding the New Russia, From Da to Yes: Understanding the East Europeans, and Understanding the Americans: A Handbook for Visitors to the United States.

Phyllis Gestrin has more than sixteen years of experience in African affairs, including postings in Somalia and Zaire with UNICEF. She has also served as a technical adviser and has designed public health programs in Africa for the U.S. Peace Corps. Her last posting before retirement was in the Africa Bureau of the United States Agency for International Development. A graduate of the University of Chicago, she has a Ph.D. in psychology/physiology from the University of Washington, a Master of Public Health from Harvard, and has taught psychology at the University of Texas (Austin). Dr. Gestrin has visited twenty-eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
