As organizations make an effort to improve customer satisfaction and return on investment, they are increasingly interested in formalizing their project management efforts. In addition, they are more focused on using projects to achieve strategic, long-range organizational objectives. Although some organizations have developed systematic approaches to conducting project management, many others feel strikingly similar pain points. To address this challenge, this report focuses on three main areas: consistency in the delivery of projects, strategic alignment in project prioritization, and meaningful project measurement that explains why some projects succeed while others fail.

This report details successful project management practices in an organization through driving consistency in approach and expertise, building project portfolios, and measuring project delivery and end results. Chapter 1 details driving consistency in project management approach and expertise. Chapter 2 details building project portfolios. Chapter 3 details measuring project delivery and end results, and Chapter 4 details challenges and lessons learned. Five in-depth case studies based on the best-practice organizations that hosted site visits are also included.
