WELCOME TO September!
We've all heard the term emotional intelligence bandied about. It's also referred to as EI or EQ, and we know it's a desirable trait to have as leaders and a trait we strive to help our employees develop. But what is it, exactly? Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and effectively use our own emotions as well as the emotions of others. It can help us navigate the complex interactions we have with others, manage our emotions, and foster long-lasting relationships. EI can help us communicate more effectively by sharing our feelings in a productive manner. Individuals with high EI can navigate conflicts with empathy and find solutions that consider everyone's needs, and leaders with high levels of emotional intelligence are more likely to inspire and motivate others, resulting in higher team morale and productivity.
But emotional intelligence does not come without its own distinct set of challenges. It's difficult to be real with ourselves about our emotions, and even more complicated to always remain calm in difficult or frustrating situations. Skillsoft's Global Head of Content for the Leadership and Business portfolio, Anju Choudhary shares her insights on some of these challenges and offers some excellent tips for overcoming them in her most recent article, 7 Ways to Improve Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace.
