"Let’s be reasonable and add an eighth day to the week that is devoted exclusively to reading."

Happy December!

With the holidays upon us, many of us are looking forward to some much-needed, well-deserved time off. In an effort to recharge our minds and feel refreshed, it's important to take time away from our usual pressurized pace — to rest and to just slow down.

Are you looking forward to reading a particular book while you relax over the coming weeks? In today's fast-paced environment, we can often find ourselves rushing through everything we do, including reading. We skim through articles, books, and even social media posts without taking the time to fully absorb the information. However, taking a step back to pause and read something that inspires you can have a profound impact on your mood, perspective, and even your overall well-being.

When you take the time to read something that inspires you, you allow yourself to fully engage with the material. You may find yourself re-reading sentences or passages, pondering the meaning of the words and reflecting on how they relate to your life. By affording yourself that time to contemplate what you're reading, you also give yourself the opportunity to fully appreciate the true context in the words.

So, the next time you come across something to read that inspires you, take a moment to slow down and really savor the experience. Allow yourself to fully engage with the material, letting the words wash over you and taking the time to reflect on their meaning. You may find that this simple act of slowing down can have a powerful effect on your outlook.

This month, join me in slowing down and discovering the meaningful shift in your perspective and mood when you take the time to read something that inspires you.

OFF THE SHELF PICK OF THE MONTH

As our ability to pay attention in a world of distractions vanishes, it's no wonder that our ability to be heard and understood ― to convey our messages ― is also threatened. Drawing from fifteen years of research, interviews, and experience from teaching students and executives, Jeanine W. Turner offers a framework to navigate social presence at work and at home. By exploring four primary communication choices ― budgeted, entitled, competitive, and invitational ― Turner shows when and where to employ each strategy to most effectively allocate our attention and command the attention of others, situations with individuals, teams, and entire organizations.

Being Present: Commanding Attention at Work (and at Home) by Managing Your Social Presence is available on Percipio as a digital book and an audiobook.
